The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Enterprise Drone

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Enterprise Drone

Short answer: Start with the job, then pick the drone. For general inspection, thermal and mapping work, the DJI Matrice 4T or 4E covers most needs in a compact body. Heavy or specialist sensors (LiDAR, GPR, magnetometers, echo sounders) need a payload platform such as the Matrice 350 RTK or Matrice 400, and spraying and spreading need an Agras T70P or T100.

Key takeaways

  • The Matrice 4E (4/3-inch mechanical-shutter mapping camera) and Matrice 4T (640 × 512 thermal) weigh about 1.2 kg and fly up to 49 minutes, per DJI.
  • The Matrice 350 RTK carries up to three gimbals, flies up to 55 minutes and is rated IP55.
  • The Matrice 400 lifts up to 6 kg, flies up to 59 minutes and adds rotating LiDAR and mmWave radar for power-line-level obstacle sensing.
  • The Agras T70P (70 L spray tank) and T100 (100 L spray tank) are DJI's agricultural drones. The Matrice drones do not spray.
  • All enterprise and Agras drones from HobiTech are quoted per configuration. Commercial flying needs a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate.

Step 1: define the job before the drone

Most enterprise drone mistakes start with the spec sheet rather than the task. Before comparing models, write down four things.

  • Deliverable. Inspection photos, a thermal report, an orthomosaic, a point cloud, a subsurface map or sprayed hectares.
  • Accuracy. Whether you need survey-grade positioning (RTK/PPK, ground control points) or visual detail is enough. Our RTK vs PPK vs GCP guide explains the trade-offs.
  • Environment. Heat, dust, rain, wind, altitude and electromagnetic interference near substations.
  • Payload weight. The sensor you need decides the airframe. A 1.2 kg drone cannot carry a GPR antenna.

Step 2: match the use case to the platform

Use case Recommended platform Why
Solar, power-line and substation inspection Matrice 4T Thermal plus 48 MP wide, 70 mm and 168 mm cameras, 1,800 m laser rangefinder
Mapping, construction progress, mining volumes Matrice 4E 4/3-inch 20 MP wide camera with mechanical shutter, plus two tele cameras
Search and rescue, firefighting, public safety Matrice 4T; Matrice 400 for heavy payloads Thermal imaging; the Matrice 400 adds spotlight and speaker accessories
LiDAR or large-format photogrammetry Matrice 350 RTK or Matrice 400 Support for Zenmuse L2 and P1 payloads
Subsurface, metal, water-depth and gas surveys Matrice 350 RTK or Matrice 400 with SPH Engineering payloads Carries GPR, magnetometers, echo sounders and methane detectors
Crop spraying and granule spreading Agras T70P or T100 Purpose-built tanks, pumps and spreaders

The current DJI enterprise line-up at HobiTech

Matrice 4E and 4T: compact all-rounders

Both share a roughly 1,219 g airframe with omnidirectional vision sensing, O4 Enterprise transmission (up to 25 km FCC) and up to 49 minutes of flight. They also share a 70 mm 48 MP medium tele and a 168 mm 48 MP tele. The Matrice 4E adds a 4/3-inch 20 MP wide camera with a mechanical shutter for mapping. The Matrice 4T adds a 48 MP wide camera and a 640 × 512 thermal sensor, with a 1280 × 1024 super-resolution mode and an NIR auxiliary light.

Matrice 350 RTK: the proven payload workhorse

The Matrice 350 RTK has a 9.2 kg maximum takeoff weight, flies up to 55 minutes and is rated IP55. It operates from −20 °C to 50 °C, which suits Indian summers. It supports dual downward gimbals plus an upward gimbal and works with Zenmuse H20/H30 series, L1, L2 and P1 payloads, as well as certified third-party payloads built on DJI's Payload SDK.

Matrice 400: heavier lift, longer range

The Matrice 400 carries up to 6 kg, flies up to 59 minutes and transmits up to 40 km (FCC). It is also rated IP55 and operates from −20 °C to 50 °C. Its rotating LiDAR and six-direction mmWave radar are designed to detect power lines.

Agras T70P and T100: agriculture

The Agras T70P has a 70 L spray tank and a 100 L spreading tank. The Agras T100 steps up to 100 L for spraying and 150 L for spreading. Both are on request.

Specialist payloads from SPH Engineering

HobiTech is an Official Partner of SPH Engineering. Its UgCS Integrated Systems connect sensors to DJI drones through the SkyHub onboard computer, which geotags data and supports true terrain following at low altitude. The main options are:

  • Ground-penetrating radar for utilities, cavities and archaeology.
  • Magnetometers for detecting buried metal, much faster than handheld survey.
  • Echo sounders for water-depth and sediment surveys.
  • Methane detectors for pipelines, landfills and plants.

Mission planning runs on UgCS, and HobiTech offers SPH Engineering survey training.

Models we don't sell, and where they fit

The Matrice 30/30T is an older compact inspection drone. Its integrated 1/2-inch cameras are covered in our M30 explainer. DJI Dock 3 enables remote, automated missions with the Matrice 4D series, as explained in why DJI Dock 3 is a game-changer. HobiTech does not sell either, but can advise via our contact page.

If your team also needs polished marketing footage of sites or projects, the Mavic 4 Pro 512GB Creator Combo (₹3,79,990 before GST) is a creative camera drone rather than an enterprise tool.

Compliance, warranty and support

Every enterprise drone must be registered on DGCA's Digital Sky portal and flown by a holder of a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate. Under the Drone Rules, 2021, drones operated in India also need a DGCA type certificate, so confirm the exact model is approved before you buy. See our DGCA drone rules guide. HobiTech's 1-year warranty covers DJI drones bought from us, but not remote controllers. Repairs run on a 72-hour turnaround. Call +91 70225 26509 or email support@hobitech.in, 10:00 AM–7:00 PM every day.

Frequently asked questions

Which DJI enterprise drone is best for thermal inspection?

For most solar, power-line and rescue work, the Matrice 4T. It combines a 640 × 512 thermal camera, three visible cameras and an 1,800 m laser rangefinder in a 49-minute airframe.

Can a Matrice drone spray crops?

No. Matrice drones carry cameras and sensors. Spraying and spreading need an Agras T70P or T100.

Should I choose the Matrice 350 RTK or the Matrice 400?

The Matrice 350 RTK suits standard Zenmuse payloads within 960 g per gimbal. The Matrice 400 suits heavier payloads up to 6 kg, longer missions and work near power lines.

How much does an enterprise drone cost in India?

HobiTech quotes Matrice and Agras drones per configuration, because batteries, payloads, RTK and training change the total. Ask via our contact page.

Does HobiTech provide DGCA pilot training?

No. HobiTech offers SPH Engineering survey training. DGCA Remote Pilot Certificates come from DGCA-authorised drone schools.
